Hello everyone! One of my fantastic instructors from the Young Writer’s Workshop is releasing a new upper MG novel — The Mage Pocket: Apprentice Alliance! It’s available for preorder now anywhere books are sold.
I’ve read and enjoyed Millie Florence’s debut MG novel, Honey Butter. I could feel the story at times, with such accurate, poetic, and sensory descriptions. So many scenes like a thunderstorm at night or drawing with chalk on the driveway were very reminiscent of my own childhood. It was sweet, had a great theme, and was written in such a strong storytelling voice with great descriptions like:
Jamie took a moment to re-adjust her shoebox before turning to plod down the sidewalk, her worn-out pink and orange flip-flops smacking her heels as she walked.
“Oh no,” Laren’s brow furrowed, and she shook her head from side to side, causing her hair to fall over her shoulders. “There are always adventures everywhere, it just takes an adventurer to see them.”
“You know, there is a sweet sort of quiet that libraries often have,” Laren commented thoughtfully. “And the smell of books. Books, I think, are what magic smells like.” And in the enchanting peace, Laren flipped to the first page and began.
The paint store was very quiet except for the usual ‘bing’ of the electric bell above the door. The air conditioning was an immense relief from the sweltering sun.
In the kitchen, moonlight, fractured by the falling rain, was spilling through the window blinds that hung over the sliding door.
Jamie felt like a bathtub with all its water going down the drain with that slurred whirring noise.
Laren’s face was calm, but her eyes shone with memories. Flashing headlights, twisted metal, salty tears, shattered windows.
Millie published Honey Butter at thirteen and has been churning out books since. Now, coming out soon is The Mage Pocket, an MG tale of magic and friendship.
